Taiwan’s fire department said at least 14 people have died in the country due to Typhoon Ragasa.
A lake in the eastern city of Hualien burst its banks, sending a huge wave of water crashing into homes in the city, the Taiwan Fire Department said on Wednesday.
Ragasa has been battering Taiwan since Monday, bringing heavy rain and winds, and is considered the strongest typhoon of the year.
According to Taiwanese authorities, the typhoon has sustained winds of up to 200 kilometers per hour and has also threatened many other areas with flooding, landslides and power outages.
Ragasa is said to be heading towards China’s Guangdong province after Taiwan, and Taiwanese authorities have announced rescue operations, school closures and flight cancellations.
